Ted: Hey, you wanna have dinner with me Saturday night?

Robin: Oh, I can't. I'm going to Orlando for a week on Friday. Some guy's attempting to make the world's biggest pancake. Guess who's covering it?

Ted: That's gonna take a week?

Robin: Yeah, he's gonna eat it too. It's another record.

A friend of Robin: Hey! What's takin' so long?!

Ted: Uh, I know this is a long shot, but how 'bout tomorrow night?

Robin: Yeah. What the hell. Jerk! That was fun!

This is a long shot

Extra expression!

Can I get/take a raincheck?!

A Raincheck

What's takin' so long?!

What took you so long?

Why are you so late?

What took you so long?

What's takin' so long?

Why are you so late?

대신 What took you so long?

1. You indicated in the survey that you go to a park. Where is it located? Can you describe a park you frequently visit?

I often go to Ilsan Lake Park that is near 정발산 station, and it takes about 20 min by subway

It's not that close to my house but at my father's store that is a bike rental shop, it's just over the road.  the name of park says all things about the park! the center of the park there is a biiiig lake! and people can walk or ride a bike along the shore of the lake.

the bike road is quite good, so many people who like to enjoy riding a cycle visit there a lot. And Peopel tend to go there for a picnic!! there are a lot of beautiful trees and flowers throughout the park and in the corner of the park there is a small basket ball coat and gate ball field where people can enjoy sports!

and around the park, there are some fancy retaurants and romantic cafes. so many couples visit there for a date. so I used to do that at there as well.

and it has small botanical garden, zoo, and playground, so I think it's quite good place for family who has some kids.

You know, so in Spring and Fall, there are tons of people who ride a cycle, walk and go on a picnic. some people play some sports, such as basket ball, badminton and catch ball.

Around the park, there are some fancy restaurants and romantic cafes. And in the park, there are cycling and jogging tracks. It is very convenience for walking or riding cycle. There are many beautiful trees and flowers throughout the park and in the corner of the park there is a small basket ball coat and gate ball field where people can enjoy sports.

2. What activities do you normally do at the park? Also, what kind of things do people such as the young and the old do at the park? Tell me in detail.

Hummm.. I usually ride a bike a lot there, 'cause father runs a bike rental shop around the park. so everytime I go there, I'm with my bike! and sometimes I bring my laptop or some books so I do my works or read a book! and guess what? when I go there with my friends, we order some delivery foods, like Chienese food, Fried Chicken, or Pizza! Can you believe it's possible?! at park we can order some delivery foods!!! it's one of the most amazing thing!!

and Young people usually tend to visit there for a date or picnic! so some people just take a rest on the lawn, and another people enjoy some sports like inline skating, skateboarding or riding a cycle.

and the olds normally tent to visit there for some exercise, picnic, and hanging out! they usually take a rest under trees and play Korean chess, Baduk, in Japanese Go. and they take a slow walk along the lake, or play gate ball that is a sport for the elderly.

so there are lots of activities that people of all ages can enjoy!! so there are always crowded.

In the park, I can do many activities. As other people do, I walk, jog and play some sports.

But among them, my favorite activity is riding a cycle. So I usually ride a cycle there.

Generally, the elderly normally take a slow walk along paths and relax under trees to Korean chess or Baduk. On the other hands young people like to enjoy physical activities such as inline skating, skateboarding or riding a cycle.

And families or couples usually go there for a picnic. So they are eating a packed lunch at Park.

3. I’d like to know about your most memorable experience at the park. Why was it so memorable? Tell me about all the things that happened at the park from beginning to end.

humm... most memorable experiecne at the park... just a memory comes up now, about a year ago, I dated my ex, and my parents didn't know that. and we just had the night together, and after the day, we had a date in Ilsan Lake Park. as you know, my father runs a bike rental shop but I couldn't go there with my ex, cause I just told them, I'd sleep at my friend's home. and you know, some owners of bike rental shop knew who I am, so I should find a store where they don't know me. we kinda had a secret date at there!! and it was first time I rode a bike for two person. so I wasn't good, so my ex was nagging me! like "you told me you're quite good at riding a bike! hey! lier!!"  but we had a lot of fun at that time. and finally we made it the secrect date successfully! but at that I just made up my mind, I won't lie to my parents! 'cause it's quite bothering me!! haha

My most memorable experience at the park was having an accident with a pedestrian. It is very terrible memory to me.

About 3 years ago, I rode my cycle in the park. At that time there were a few people. So I raised my tempo. I took my eyes off the road for a moment. Unfortunately, during the short time, I crushed a pedestrian. So I took her to hospital right now.

Fortunately, she had only light contusion. I apologized her, so I really sorry to her.

After that day, when I ride a cycle, I have to keep eyes forward.

4. You indicated in the survey that you go to parks. What is the purpose of going to parks? Why do you like to go there?

I think the reason I go to parks is... just to take a rest. I don't like doing some physical activities that much. so everytime I go to a park I bring some books or my laptop with a mat! so on the lawn, I just can do everything, taking a nap, reading books and just doing something with smartphone~ I just like the time. you know one of Korean culture is doing everything quickly!! but in parks I don't need to do that!! I can enjoy my slow life at there~ that's why I love to go to parks!

and sometimes I bring my guitar there, and parctice it! with friends or alone. and recently in a parkd I tried to compose a hilarious song about spring, it sucks but during the composition, I had a lot of fun!!!

See! that's how I enjoy this spring in parks~

and those are the purpose of going to parks for me! :)

I usually go to the park, because I like that place and I like do activities that I can do at there.

My favorite is riding a cycle, so I usually go there for cycling. And there are so many beautiful trees and flowers throughout the park. During the riding a cycle, I can see beautiful scenery and I feel energetic and lively. So I like that place,

5. When did you recently go to the park? With whom did you go to the park? What things did you do at the park? Tell me all about the recent experience in as much as you can

You know, in Korea it's Spring now! the weather is... so fantastic!!!! in this weather, I couldn't help but go out!! for anything!! so recently the weather was... soooo....goood! so I just went to Ilsan Lake Park after my English Class! and actually I had something to do, so I just brought my bike to the park! and was looking for some good place to do my works! and I settled down a spot, and did my things! with cool breeze, warm sunlight, and great music!! it was wonderful!!

you know, my guitar is in my father's shop so after the work I went to the park again with my guitar!!

in fantastic weather, I couldn't help compose a song about this spring! so I tried to do that. and the result sucked!!! but it was so hilarious!! maybe if some people saw me, they'd think I'm a crazy guy!!

at that time I felt like I'm in Spain again! at there I really liked to go to a Park to take a rest!! on the lawn~~

anyway at that time I just made up my mind, I should go there often to take a rest!

so I'm trying to go and bring my friends there!! to hang out! to be relaxed!! as mush as I can.

Recently, I went to the park with my friend last weekend. At there, first, we enjoyed riding a cycle, because I and my friend like the park whose cycle track is very convenient and scenery is very beautiful. So during the riding a cycle, we could see the beautiful scenery and feel energetic and lively. And then we took e a rest under the tree. After that we have light dinner at eatery, and then we have a drink at small bar.

Role play

1. I’ll give you a situation. Please act it out imagine that you want to go to a park in your neighborhood with your friend this weekend. Call your friend and ask three or four questions to go there with him or her.

Hey, Hi! This is Beomsoo! and Do you have any plan on this weekend?! if you're free, it'll be really good to go to a park!! as you know, these days, weather is soooooooo soooo nice!!

Hello. This is Bumsoo. I’m calling to ask some your weekend schedule. Do you have a time this weekend? If you have, Why don’t you go to Ilsan Lake Park? I want to go there with you, please answer me Yes. I think that I’m planning to bring a packed lunch? If you want, I have to bring it!! And do you like ride a cycle? If so, Do you ride a cycle at there? There are some bike rental shop, so we can borrow bikes. I expect this weekend. Please call me back as soon as possible.

2. I’m sorry, but you have a problem to solve. You and Your friend are scheduled to go to a park today, but it will rain heavily throughout the day. What would you do? Call your friend and explain the problem. Then offer two alternatives to deal with this issue.

Hello. This is Bumsoo. I’m sorry that we could not go to the park today because of the heavy rain. But don’t worry about that because I came up with a few alternatives. The first is that we can go to the park next weekend. Or we can go to an indoor gym. And I have another option. We may go to a theater instead. Which of these options do you prefer?

3. I also like to go to parks. Just ask me three or four questions to find out more about the activities I do at the park.

I’d glad to hear that we have a something in common. I usually go to park on weekend. When do you go to the park? And when I go to the park, I like to cycle. What kind of activities do you usually do at park? And who do you enjoy your activities with? In my case, I usually ride the cycle alone. What things do you usually bring when you go to a park?

4. I enjoy going to parks with my family members, too. Ask me three or four questions to learn more about my favorite park and its facilities.

I’d glad to hear that we have a something in common. I usually go to Ilsan Lake Park because there are so many comfortable benches and beautiful trees. So where is your favorite park? And why do you like the park? What kind of facilities does your favorite park have?

And do you bring some refreshment for lunch? And when do you go to the park? I usually go to park on weekend

★ Key Word
ㆍa hoot and a half

a hoot an a half는 캐나다에서 잘 쓰이는 표현으로 물론 미국에서도 의미는 통합니다.
a hoot an a half는 그냥 hoot 보다 0.5배 더 재미있다는 의미 입니다.

I don’t know what Arctic expedition you guys were on, but I thought it was a hoot and a half.

Housing

1. What kind of problem does your country have about the real estate market? Please give me a detailed description of the problem.

There are some problems about real estate market in Korea, and I think the biggest one is the market is unstable.

In Korea there is a special way to rent a house called 전세, it's only for Korea.

It's like a way to rent a house, but don't pay every month, pay big money just once two year and when you leave the house, you can get the money back.

I know Korean real estate system is quite weird for foriegners, but it's the way we rent a house

And Korean poeple want to have their own house, and they hope the price of the house goes up.

It means buying a house is kinda investment in Korea that's why poeple buy it even though they get loaned from bank.

but thesedays people don't know if the house price goes up or down, so they hesitate to buy a house right now. so people prefer 전세 to buying it. beacuse of that, the price of 전세 is almost same as buying and sometimes it's more expensive, but the anxiety of the house price makes people want 전세.

so now Korean goverment must publish a reasonable real estate policy to relieve citizen's worries.

- What problems are there in housing in your country? What are people faced with about housing these days? What issues in housing do they talk about?

2. Is there a government agency which can handle the problems in the real estate market? If so, what activities does the agency usually do? Please tell me about the agency with many details.

Actually, I don't know about this topic that much. but I'll try to explain this as much as possible

Goverment keeps doing something to control the house price but I think it's never worked out.

they've just published so temporary and superficial policies so I think Korean real estate market's never been stable.

and I think it's not just because of goverment but the way that citiznes thinks.

Korean people think where I live estimates my own value, so If I lived in a house that is 100 million wons, I would be a person valued 100 million wons. and if someone lived in rented apartment, people would ignore them, and in severe cases, they say to their kids "Don't play with those who live in rented apartment." when I heard that, I was really really shocked!

where people lives can't judge their value! but it's real!

so I just think Korean people'd better grow up! be more mature!

3. How have the house or housing in your country changed over the last 10 years? Tell me all about the changes in the houses or housing you know in as much detail as you can.

/ How have houses changed in your country since the past? Tell me with a lot of details. / How have your houses changed since you were young? What kinds of houses did you live in when you were young? And How about now?

Actually, I don’t know exactly how have the house changed for 10 years. So I explain changing of house seen from my experience. Since I was born, I'd lived in a house not an apartment until I was 21 years old. And then I moved to an apartment. During living a house, around my house, there are not apartments. I think at that time High apartment building is only located in center of Seoul. But nowadays almost all of houses have changed apartment builds. During childhood, I don’t like apartment because it is desolate for me. At that time, the apartment complex is very not eco-friendly, there were only apartment buildings and cement floors. But thesedays, around my apartment, there are so many trees and flowers throughout the complex. And during childhood, we usually use oil as fuel, but now all of apartments use gas, I think it's more eco-friendly than oil. So now, I still like a a house but I like an apartment as well.

4. Now, let’s talk about your house. Please describe it in detail. / Please describe your house in detail. / Now, let’s talk about your house. Where do you live? What kinds of things are there around your house? And How does your house look like? Tell me in detail.

- I live in an apartment at Eunpyung-gu with my family, and it's on 10th floor.

Actually it was first time I live in an apartment so it was not that comfortable for me at first but now I'm used to it.

I've lived in this apartment for about 4~5 years right after the construction was done, so at that time there were nothing like convinient stores or something but now even though many buildings are under construction, there are tons of stores I can use.

and there is Bukhan Mt near by my apartment and I always can see the scenery of beautiful Mt, at my balcony.

and the best thing is my apartment is so close with a subway station and a bus stop.

someday I should leave this house, but it'd be always my sweet home

5. How does your room look like? What kind of furniture is there in your room? Do you like your room? / Where do you live? How does your room look like? Describe it in detail. /

- My room is not that big, so I can't put a closet in my room so I just have a dress hanger.

and I just have a bed and desk with bookcasse it's an only place to put books on so there are all of books in my home on my shelf. it's the worst thing ever... it looks so messy but there's nothing I can do.

Actually I think my room is my own territory so sometimes my mom or sister get in my room without my permission. everytime they do, I feel I get invaded but they don't care about it. so I should stand it til I have my own house.

as I said earlier it's my own place to feel relaxe and comfortable so How can I not love my room?!

6. Please tell me about the countryside in your country. How does it look like? How do people who live there look like? Tell me in detail.

I think it's not that different with your country's houses. as you know in cities there are only so tall buildings like a skyscraper but in countryside you can see some houses which are one or two stories of with farmland.

How they live is almost same as city people. jsut they usually follow the plough or rasie cattles, pigs or chickens. but thesedays food-and-mouth-disease and AI which means Avian Influenza are the biggest problem to farmers.

and people who is in the agriculture industry is affected by FTA with China

so it's not easy to live in countryside thesedays

7. What do people in the countryside usually do in each season?

It's depends on what people doesone who is in the agriculture industry just do farming from spring to fall and in winter they just prepare next year, next spring

and the other who is in the stock growing just take care of their cattles, pigs or chickens in every each season!

there's nothing special in Korean countryside life, just same as yours.

8. Have you had any memorable experience while you visited countryside? When was it? What did you do there? Why was it so memorable? Tell me as much detail as possible.

Actually I've never had any experiece in countryside, 'cause my grand parents used to live in city, and I just travel some attractions in Korea. so I can tell you, I've never been countryside entire my life.

So I think I can tell you other story at other questions.

9. I live in Canada. Just ask me three or four questions to learn more about where I live, I live in the USA. Just ask me three or four questions to get more information where I live.

I've never been Canada / USA so I have some questions I need to ask you. so where do you live now? a house or an apartment? I think in there people prefer living a house to an apartment.

And as far as I know usually apartments are cheaper than houses, is it right?

I think in Korea apartments are more expensive because of location. in Seoul, or some city around Seoul, there are almost only apartments and the demand is higher that's why apartments are more expensive.

And... Do you live in a city or countryside? And I want to know how different does people live in city and countryside.

and as last question, do you live with your family?! sometimes I really want to be independent from my parents it's kinda hard in Korea now.

10. I live with my roommate in my apartment. Just ask me three or four questions about my roommate.

11. Please describe your house. What responsibilities do you have for in your house? And What others do for what? Tell me in detail. / You live in a house with your family members. What responsibilities do you have at home? And what responsibilities do others have? Tell me in detail. / What kinds of responsibilities do you have at home? What responsibilities do you family members have? Please tell me in detail.  / On typical days, what responsibilities do you usually take at home?

Doing the dishes is usually my job in my house 'cause when it comes to washing the dishes, nobody beats me, so my mom wants me to do that. And now I'm in between jobs so I do many things such as doing the laundary, vacuuming, mopping and sometimes even cooking. In a family of my parents' generation usually mom, wife usually do almost house chores. and when I was growing up my mom did too! but now my sister and I helped her a lot.

but sometimes I should do both cooking and doing the dishes, everytime I do that, I become quite annoyed! of course my sister and dad come home after work, and now I don't work so it's natural that I should make dinner for them and clean up. it's not optional 'cause it means my mom come home at late night, and if I did not, she'd have to do that when she got home. but it's still annoying! so I just feel my mom was so poor... she always did that alone!

so I just make my mind if I got married, I would do house chore a lot for my future wife. and at least if she cooked, I'd wash the dishes!!!

12. Now, I’ll give you a situation. Please act it out. Window in your house has broken. Call a repair shop and explain the situation. Then ask some questions to repair it. / The window in your house has been broken. When did you find it out? Why was it broken? How do you solve the problem? / Call a repair shop and explain the situation. Then ask three or four questions to repair the window

Oh! Boy! the window's broken! Why does everything always happend to me...?!

Anyway.. I gotta call the repair shop now.

Hi! is this XX repair shop?! this is Beomsoo, I'm calling to fix my window, I don't know what happened but it broke last night. so I think I should replace the window so would you let me know how much it costs to replace it?! and when is it possible to fix it?! I should be out of town for a while soon, so I need you to do that as soon as possible. and you know, I always call your store everytime I got problems so.... Can I get some discount?! Well... actually thesedays I'm short on cash, so listen, I've recommended your store to many people! I believe you can do this for me. if so, see you tomorrow! Thank  you!

- There appears to have been an accident

13. But you have to solve a problem. You should have it fixed by next week. Call the repair shop again and suggest 3 or 4 ways to do it. / You have to have the window repaired by the day after tomorrow. Call the repair shop and explain the reason. / You have a problem to resolve. You and the repair man had a plan to repair the window the day after tomorrow but you have something urgent so you have to fix it as soon as possible. Call a repair shop and explain the situation and give two or three reasons.

Hi! is there XX repair shop?! This is beomsoo again. you remember I said I should be out of town for a while, and this schedule's been advanced so I should fix it by next week.

so is it easy to replace it?! if you're busy, I can try to do that by myself. and if so, it'd be cheaper right?!

and

14. That is the end of the situation. Have you had an experience that something was broken in your house? It might have been a window or something else? What was it? What was the reason? How did you solve it? Tell me everything in detail.

15. Do you have any special memory with one of your family members? When was it? Who was she or he? What did you do with him or her? Tell me from beginning to end.

When I was a middle school student, I traveld with my dad, only me and dad. you know, Korean students should study hard and taking private lessons a lot. at that time I was sick and tired of everything. I totally lost my interest of studying. You know, in Korea there is 학원, which means in there, teachers usually teach advanced lectures I mean if I were in 6th grade, I'd learn lecture of 7th or 8th grade. and I was under a lot of stress. so my mom told me 'why don't you travel with your father for a while?' so I just went with my dad.

I didn't remeber exactly what we did but we just

7. What housework did you do when you were a child?

9. Have you had any memorable experience while you were doing house chores? What house chores did you do? Why did you do them? What happened? Why was it so memorable?

15. When you rented a house, what problems did you have? What did you first consider when you solved the problem? How did you resolve it?

15. These days, houses have changed a lot and technology also has affected modern houses. Please explain how it has affected houses.

12. I live in a brand new house. Just ask me three or four questions about my house.

☆When it comes to wash/do the dishes nobody beats me, I'm so good at that!

Introduce myself

Hi, I'm Beomsoo, and 29 year-old guy

Now I'm in between jobs so I'm doing this for looking a job so I just hope I come across well to you and get a good score!

Anyway, I was born and still living in Seoul with my family.

and I think I can tell you what I'm interested in thesedays

From stopping studying for toeic, Learning English became a kinda hobby now, so it's not stressful anymore. Of course when I feel my English has stagnated, it's so annoying but what can I do? the only thing I can do is "keep doing this"

and recently I started writing! actually I really suck at writing but it'd be good to organize my thoughts and sometiems it can make me come up(remind) my old memories.

I think writing is always important at work, love or even death like making a will. so now I'm really bad at writing but it's getting better and someday it'd be really helpful for my life!

by the way I think I should move on next question, so see you at next question Eva.

Weather

1. Tell me about the seasons in your country. What season do you like best? Why do you like it? What things do you usually do in that season?

I like Winter best, there are many reasons for that so allow me to expalin one after another

First, I hate summer! ´cause Summer in Korea is really humid and hot... so it always makes me feel sticky, terrible and awful. it's so horrible but in winter, It's okay. I just can stand the cold air.

And in Summer even if you feel so hot, you can't take your clothes off anymore but In Winter, if you get a cold snap, you can put on clothes as much as you want. I think it's kinda proper reason for that.

and Finally, you know, in Korea there is a thing called Magic Shoe Insole which means that is.. kinda thick insole to be taller. I'm little bit short.. so sometime I need it but in Summer I usually wear sneakers so I can't use it but In Winter I like to wear boots so I can use it everytime I want! it's really great for me!

2. What kind of things do Korean people do during summer and winter seasons? Tell me in detail.

In summer,

During the summer, people usually go on vacations. Of course, the beaches are generally the hot places. 경포대, 해운대, 대천 are most famous beaches. These places are so energetic and lively, but so crowded. So some people who like rafting or fishing go to valleys and rivers. These places are less crowded than beaches, but during the vacation times, these places also are crowded.

And during the winter, people usually go skiing and snowboarding. So ski resorts are very crowded, so some people go spa. Generally older person go to spa because it is very relaxed and warm.

And young person enjoy winter sports. And they importantly think about Christmas. So many students feel too much press of dating expense. So I think that this Christmas culture must change like American style that focuses on family.

In short, I think all of world people are similar to activity in the each season.

3. Do you have some memorable things about the weather? If so, how was the weather at that time? What happened? Why was it memorable to you?

The most memorable moment regarding weahter happened... quite long time ago. When I was in military service, that winter, it snowed the heaviest for more than a century. The military bases shall always remain in battle capable condition, because Korea is technically still at war. At that time, I had to shovel and sweep away snow during the snowing. The snow was viewed as nothing more than trash falling from the sky. However much I shoveled out, the snow was endlessly stacked up on the yard. The scene is still lingering in my eyes to this today.

And at that time, Korean winter liked to Siberian, because Siberian very cold air mass was coming to Korea. So 연천’s lowest degree is around minus 30 degree Celsius. I don’t forget that air until now.

4. What is the weather like in your city today?

Now in Korea Spring is around the corner.

It is summer in Korea.

Summer in Korean is usually rainy season, so it is very hot and humid. And the average temperature is around 30 degree Celsius.

But today is a little cool, because yesterday, it was heavy rain.

I generally don’t like sweating and clammy air, so I don’t like summer.

But I love water sports, such as wake board, windsurfing and others. Generally I go to 가평 for wake board about twice in summer. And sometime I go to beach and waterpark. These places are very joyful and have good sceneries. So although it is very hot and humid, sometimes I like summer.

- When it comes to the changing seasons I'm sensitive. and especially in fall, I feel so melancholy
